Boxing Fight: Artur Beterbiev is the current undisputed light heavyweight champion, and Callum Smith believes he can knock him out.
On August 19, the Liverpool fighter will go to Beterbiev’s chosen city of Quebec City to take against him for his IBF, WBO, and WBC light-heavyweight crowns.
The 19-fight winning streak for Beterbiev has all come through knockout, but former WBA super-middleweight champion Smith thinks he can halt the unbeaten champion.
“I think I defeated him. I have faith in my own ability,” Smith told Sky Sports.
“That doesn’t mean I think the battle will be simple. While the fight is still going on, I feel he has been injured, and if I see more people hurt him, I am confident that I can as well.
“Whether we need them or not, we’ll have to wait and see, but the objective is to go over there, beat him, grab his three belts, and then come home. I’m incredibly meticulous in what I do, and I’ll be prepared for the hardest 12 rounds of my career.
“I’ve won the title of world champion, but my goal is to win two titles. I believe that a fighter is always looking for more, and I put a lot of effort into achieving this position. I finally have the chance to realise my ambition, and I plan to fight for it and take the risk.”
Smith has won two fights in the 175-pound division after suffering his sole career loss to current undisputed 168-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2020; the most recent being a stoppage victory over Mathieu Bauderlique past August.
In his most recent bout of the year, Beterbiev defeated British opponent Anthony Yarde in eight rounds in January.
However, Smith believes that his boxing IQ will help him win the title of new Canadian unified champion. “I think I have learned a little more about my game,” he remarked. I believe you need to be a little smarter. I also believe you need to make the most of your positive qualities, such as a good boxing brain.
“At the top level, even the tiniest error might cause you to lose the battle, so I’ve got to stay alert. I have a few weeks to practise those repetitions and make sure I have the appropriate strategy, but I have complete faith in my talents.”
Smith said, “I think I can beat anyone in the world on my day, when I’m at my best, and I think I’m at my best right now.”
