Boxing Match: In order to agree to a rematch with Katie Taylor, Chantelle Cameron argues it must be on her terms.
By putting on a career-best performance on Saturday to maintain her position as the undisputed super-lightweight champion and snap her opponent’s unbeaten streak, the 32-year-old spoilt Taylor’s return to Ireland.
Cameron improved to 18-0 after winning a well-deserved majority decision after dominating Taylor from the opening bell and forcing Taylor to play catch-up in the latter rounds.
“It was the hardest fight of my life, and I knew I had to develop the performance of a lifetime as well,” Cameron said to Sky Sports.
“I think my team and I always felt that I had Katie Taylor beat, which is why we accepted the battle without hesitation. We didn’t offer any justifications or try to drag the fight out; instead, we accepted all that was asked of us because we were certain that we had Katie Taylor defeated.
“To do it on her return was the cherry on top.”
It was the one blemish on Taylor’s otherwise flawless record as the uncontested lightweight champion; Cameron rejected claims that the 36-year-old was losing steam.
“She showed Saturday night she’s there to fight, she’s got the speed, she’s got the boxing IQ, she’s tough and has a lot of heart,” Cameron continued.
She demonstrated on Saturday night that she is ready to fight, that she had the necessary speed, boxing intelligence, toughness, and heart,” according to Cameron.
“I wouldn’t say she’s declining; she just ran into her worst nightmare,” the author said.
Despite insisting that Taylor would need to have more influence over the proceedings, Cameron is open to the idea of a rematch with Taylor.
Cameron responded, “I’m open to it, but I believe it has to make sense for me.”
