Batsman Usman Khawaja and all-rounder Marcus Stoinis have been included in the preliminary squad released by Cricket Australia for the summer tour in England. Both players had lost out on national contracts after falling out of favour with the selectors. Three uncapped players Daniel Sams, Riley Meredith and Josh Philippe were also included in the 26-man provisional squad. The notable absentees from the squad were Nathan Coulter-Nile and Peter Handscomb.
The Aussies are looking to take an enlarged squad to England given the logistical restrictions due to the coronavirus situation. Earlier, Australia was scheduled to play a 3 match ODI series as well as a 3 match T20I series which was cancelled due to the pandemic. Cricket Australia has come out and said that they are doing their level best to make sure that the series goes ahead.
We continue to work with the ECB and government agencies and a decision on the tour will be made in due course,” selector Trevor Hohns said in a statement. “In the meantime, the identification of a preliminary list will enable us to work with players and states more directly on the preparation for the tour in the hope it can proceed.”
