All-rounder Carlos Brathwaite has come out and said that Ben Stokes should be Jofra Archer’s role model. “Stokes needs to put his arm around Jofra,” Brathwaite said, “He needs to usher him from where he is now to get Jofra to where Stokes is as a leader and Mr England.” Archer was dropped for the second test as he was found to breach bio-secure protocols prior to the second test against the Windies.
Stokes has seen his career riddled with a number of setbacks both on and off the field. During the final of T20 World Cup in 2016, Stokes was hit by Braithwaite for 4 consecutive sixes as the English lost the final to the Windies. Off the field, Stokes was charged with affray and missed out on the 2017-18 ashes. He was later acquitted of any charges.
On Friday, Ben stokes scored a sublime 176 to lead England to a dominant position in the second test having lost the opener in Southampton. “It’s very, very difficult to come back from those two public humiliations,” said Brathwaite, “You think not only the T20 World Cup but what happened that night in Bristol. Two very important incidents, one on the field in a final, one-off the field with a legal battle and front-page news. The comeback he’s made is remarkable, so Jofra hasn’t got far to look.”
Stokes and Brathwaite were teammates in the Indian Premier League even before Archer made his debut for England. Famously, before Archer bowled the super over in the World Cup Final, Stokes told Archer that this over will not define his career as a cricketer. “There will need to be a similar chat to Jofra after this breach,” said Brathwaite. “They seem good friends. Jof has spoken about their relationship.”
Archer will now have to spend 5 days in isolation. Stokes’ has said that he had a word with Archer. “I’ve stayed in contact with him over text,” said Stokes, who captained England at the Ageas Bowl. “We understand it can be a very vulnerable and lonely place for him right now. “It’s not an ideal position to be in for Jof, but when you spend so much time with someone, you take away the outside noise and get to understand the emotions he’s going through. Making sure that Jof is as happy as he possibly can be is the main thing for us.
