Cricket Live: The IPL 2023 championship game between Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans eventually began on Monday, May 29 after being postponed due to nonstop rain on the previous day. After choosing to bat first in the crucial match, Gujarat was invited by Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni.
Shubman Gill, the GT opener, expressed his feelings on the game being moved to the reserve day before the final and noted that it is “mentally exhausting” because the entire squad was excited to play on Sunday.
Not very tough or easy. To play the game yesterday, we were all quite excited. It seemed intellectually demanding because we did not engage in any physical exercise, yet you are great physically. Shubman Gill told IPL broadcasters prior to the championship game, “We want to play it like just another match and finish the job.
Speaking further about performing in front of his family at the stadium, Gill added that he enjoys having them there to cheer him on and doesn’t feel any pressure.
“I enjoy having the family watch the game. In their company, I don’t feel any more or less strain. Playing in front of the family is exhilarating because your positive moments grow even greater,” said Gill.
In the final, Gill played a quickfire inning of 39 off 20 while blasting seven fours, continuing to appear in excellent form. However, MS Dhoni’s lightning-quick glove work ended his innings when he stumped him, giving CSK their maiden victory.
Gill tops Jos Buttler in terms of runs scored within an IPL season.
With 890 runs from 17 innings, an average of 59.33, a strike rate of 157.80, three hundreds, and four fifty-singles, the 23-year-old broke records and made history. For the second-most runs in a single IPL season, Gill behind Jos Buttler (863 runs in 2022). Virat Kohli, a former captain of the RCB, is at the top of the list with 973 runs to his credit in 2016.
Going back to the game, Gujarat scored a whopping 214/4 in their allotted 20 overs after being given the opportunity to bat first. Wriddhiman Saha scored 54 runs off 39 balls, while Sai Sudharsan played a brilliant innings of 96 runs off 47 balls. In four overs, Matheesha Pathirana returned with stats of 2/44.
