WTC Final: Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar recently spoke with Star Sports’ “Follow the Blues” on the Indian cricket team’s imminent difficulty in adjusting to the lengthier format of Test cricket for the ICC WTC Final. The biggest challenge the players will have will be making the switch from the T20 format to Test cricket, according to Gavaskar.
Gavaskar pointed out that as the majority of players are used to the shorter format, only Cheteshwar Pujara, who has been participating in the English County Championship, has experience playing in the longer format under English conditions. In addition, Gavaskar discussed Ajinkya Rahane’s chance to shine in the World Test Championship following his outstanding performance in the IPL 2023. Gavaskar emphasised the value of Rahane’s performance at number 5 and his ability to reclaim his spot in the Indian squad while expressing his confidence in Rahane’s skills and experience in England.
Sunil Gavaskar stated that the main challenge for India would be to adjust to the longer test cricket format. He added, “The biggest challenge would be the fact that just about everyone will be coming out of a T20 format. That will thus be the main problem, in my opinion. The main test for them will be Cheteshwar Pujara, who is the only player on their team who has participated in the English County Championship and has played the lengthier format in these circumstances.
“After his outstanding performance in the IPL 2023, Ajinkya Rahane may get the chance to play in the World Test Championship,” according to Gavaskar. “He’s got a lot of experience having played in England, having scored runs in England,” he added. “He will thus be important down at number 5, in my opinion. And yes, I do think he has something to prove. I also think he still has plenty of cricket left in him, and this is a great chance for him. I’m hopeful he’ll be able to take advantage of this chance with all of his expertise and get a spot for himself back on the Indian squad.”
