ICC Team: The ICC Men’s Team Rankings are based on a combination of youth and experience, and according to former India head coach Ravi Shastri, this is why India has been able to hold onto the top spot. The team captained by Rohit Sharma just overtook Australia to claim the first position in the Test rankings. They are currently in the lead with 121 rating points, followed by Australia in second with 116 rating points.
The second ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia will take place at The Oval in London from June 7–12. This will be Australia’s first World Tennis Championship final, although New Zealand defeated India in the first competition in 2021.
Shastri was questioned about the rankings before the WTC final on the most recent episode of The ICC Review. The former Indian cricketer hailed the stability India had achieved in recent years under Rohit’s leadership and the direction of head coach Rahul Dravid.
“It’s a tribute to their consistency, their fitness, and the way they’ve worked over the last five or six years to now be hungry and proud of wanting to belong there,” Shastri told the show’s presenter Sanjana Ganesan.
India’s ability to hold onto its position, according to Shastri, is a result of the calibre of its players. The 61-year-old asserted that the players on the Indian side are seasoned veterans who are battle-hardened due to their senior age.
“The calibre of the players. When you look at the Indian Test team, many of these players are at the height of their abilities. They have international experience, are of an age when they are battle-hardened and have travelled extensively. They are familiar with the fundamentals of Test cricket, one-day cricket, and T20 cricket,” he added.
The squad will be able to reach the top two or three and remain there for three or four years, according to Shastri, who also noted that there is a lot of experience in Test match cricket.
“There are both young players and veteran ones in the mix. Particularly in the white-ball variants of the game, there is a young influx. However, the Test match cricket core has a tonne of experience. That is what distinguishes them, then. When you have it, you’ll see that teams that finish in the top two or three typically stay there for three to four years,” he continued.
