Johnny Bairstow scored a hundred while Moen Alli made a quickfire century as Team Morgan was beaten by Team Moeen in their first intra-squad ODI on Tuesday. Bairstow finished on 127 from 88 balls and was helped by Moeen Ali himself who scored 85 off just 45 balls. Moeen Alli was named vice-captain to Eoin Morgan early in the day for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against Ireland. Moeen hit seven boundaries and six maximums to help his team post a target of 326 for the opposition to chase down.
From the 24-man training group, Jason Roy, James Vince, Tom Curran and Matt Parkinson did not feature due to knocks and niggles. Parkinson has been now ruled out of the series against Ireland and is set to leave the bubble. There was flexibility in the squads with Sam Hain and Liam Livingstone batting twice for Moeen’s team while Tom Banton batted for both sides. None of the batting hopefuls was able to capitalise, Hain managed nine off 18 deliveries and then 11 off 21, while Livingstone did at least blast 24 from 11 balls at the back end of the innings, having earlier fallen for one; Banton was dismissed for a duck when opening for Team Moeen and managed three batting at No 5 for Morgan.
Morgans team struggled with the target despite Ben Duckett giving them a good start scoring 68 off 65 deliveries. Morgan himself got himself off to a good start but failed to capitalise perishing for33 off 24 with the required rate climbing. The wickets were shared for Team Moeen by Reece Topley, Henry Brookes and Tom Helm each taking two wickets. Moeen took 3 wickets himself as Team Morgan collapsed to 225 all out in 32.3 overs. Earlier, leg-spinner Adil Rashid took four wickets, leaking 65 runs in the process in his seven overs.
