A new Amazon Prime Video series starting this week called “El Presidente” is casting a satirical look through the eyes of deceased former Argentine football boss Julio Grondona on the dirty dealings of South American football.
He died in 2014 and the eight-part series, that stream from Friday on Amazon’s video service, has recounted stories about dirty deals with football connected with Grondona.
Armando Bo is the founder of the film, director and executive producer.
“It’s one of those situations where the reality is more unusual than fiction and I was sort of compelled to make it with humor and satire,” Bo, who earned an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 2015 for “Birdman,” told Reuters.
“I find it really fascinating to picture Don Julio presenting the tale from the other side,” said Bo.
Grondona was known as “the godfather” and ruled Argentine football for more than 3 decades. But Bo focuses on an alternate side of the legend: “And he is saying it in a confident way, having experienced it and with nothing to risk.”
