Dani Olmo clarified his decision to join Dinamo Zagreb’s RB Leipzig, conceding a future move to Barcelona in January has never been a “true choice” for him.
The 22-year-old had spent the previous 5 years of his career with Dinamo in Croatia, but he became one of the biggest properties in European football after his stellar performances at last summer’s U21 European Championships in Spain.
While questioned why a move to Barca never came true, the international Spain said to Goal: “Maybe that isn’t a question to me. It didn’t happen to me so I’m not sure whether it was a real possibility.”
“I knew sooner or later the moment of quitting will arrive, as happened. Leipzig was one of the clubs who had most interest in me. That’s why we agreed to transfer here.”
Olmo continues to confess that the chance to play in La Liga one day still retains significant appeal to him as he admires the division’s extremely “competitive” existence.
As for his history with Barcelona, a variety of top clubs, including Barca, were linked to the winger’s signature last year.
The most possible target for Olmo was indeed Camp Nou as he rose through the ranks of La Masia before joining Dinamo. But the winger maintains that a move to Catalonia was never really on the table.
