Since returning to Barcelona in an administrative capacity, Eric Abidal has experienced a turbulent return. His very public dispute with Lionel Messi has jeopardized a smooth reintegration, not to mention the damage it has done to the unity within the Catalan community.
Abidal’s role in Barcelona has, of late, been made more difficult not only because of his disagreement with Messi but because of the fact that he allegedly accused the team players of being responsible for the dismissal of Ernesto Valverde.
Moreover, elections scheduled for the end of the 2020/21 season in Barcelona may vote in a new president, who may decide to introduce a fresh set of faces, which would be yet another reason for Abidal to find better alternatives.
As such, a new way out may present itself for Abidal. Lyon might be interested in offering a role as their new technical director. Such an offer makes sense for Lyon, which has been recently moving in a new direction.
Only summer of last year, Juninho Pernambucano was appointed the club’s director of sports. Pernambucano and Abidal were teammates in Lyon, which is why hiring Abidal will be a move that Brazilian fans would much appreciate.
However, Eric Abidal would require real options to be tempted to leave Barcelona, which is not the case at present. Although RMC did recently announce that Lyon is looking to recruit Abidal instead of Florian Maurice, the previous choice for the role in question, there is also interest shown in Bruno Cheyrou, Loic Desire and Paul Mitchell.
