According to Italian Football Federation president Gabriele Gravina, Serie A could lose more than € 700 million (£628m/$769 m) of income if preparations to revive the league do not actually happen.
So, all eyes and hopes are on Italy.
“We worked with dedication to ensure Italy as a country gets back on its feet, including sport, which is a significant working field that includes about 100,000 workers and produces income for the state,” Gravina told the Italian magazine Riparte l’Italia.
He continued: “We have worked unceasingly with Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora, Minister of Economy and Finance Roberto Gualtieri and Minister of Health Roberto Speranza to establish appropriate conditions for the resumption of professional football.
“This is because we can only stop the collapse of revenue by returning to the pitch which would otherwise be more than €700 m in the short term. Due to COVID-19 pandemic lockdown we have already lost more than €500m.”
“The federation’s task is to get football going again and avoid the economic recession irreparably destroying Italian passion for sport,” he went on.
