Manchester United 2-1 Fulham: Manchester United finished third in the Premier League thanks to a 2-1 win over Fulham. The Portuguese Bruno Fernandes made the winning goal for The Red Devils.
Ten Hag closes first season at United with third place after victory over Fulham
In the meeting between United and Fulham, nothing was at stake except honour. The Mancunians already secured a Champions League ticket this week with a 4-1 win over Chelsea, while the visitors from London no longer had a chance at European football. The PhD candidate finishes the season in tenth place.
Tete headed in a Willian corner at the near post. It was the defender’s first goal in the Premier League. Not much later, Fulham had a great opportunity to double the margin after Casemiro committed a foul in the box. Aleksandr Mitrovic, however, saw his effort from eleven metres turned by David de Gea.
On the other side of the field, Alejandro Garnacho hit the crossbar. The Argentinian received the ball from Malacia and swung with the right. His shot landed on the crossbar above Bernd Leno. Nevertheless, Manchester United put things in order before the break. Jadon Sancho simply scored his sixth goal of the season after Fred’s perseverance: 1-1. Sancho was set up by Ten Hag as a replacement for Antony, who will probably still be available during next Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City.
Second half
Immediately after the break, Marcus Rashford had a great opportunity to give Manchester United the lead for the first time. His shot just missed the wrong side of the post for the Englishman. Nevertheless, Ten Hag’s team took the lead not much later. Again Fred was important. The Brazilian midfielder put Bruno Fernandes alone in front of Leno with a watched through ball. The Portuguese outwitted the German with a very watched marker: 2-1.
Manchester United then – partly in view of next Saturday’s FA Cup final against fellow townsman and arch-rival Manchester City at Wembley – slowed down a bit. Ten Hag made a number of substitutions and also let Weghorst make minutes in his possibly last home game for The Mancunians. In the end, there was no more scoring at Old Trafford.
