Premier League teams will be permitted to sign short-term contract extensions with players whose existing contracts expire on 30 June.
Every Premier League club will now have until June 23 to agree these extensions with their players. Players from all 20 clubs are now free to sign short-term deals before the end of the season, if necessary.
Since March, most football leagues around the globe have been stalled by the suspension of football due to the coronavirus pandemic.
With the Premier League pursuing a proposal to revive the current 2019-20 campaign and continue behind closed doors, a big break arrived when the UK Government declared its readiness for professional sport to return from 1 June.
“What we decided is to ensure, as far as possible, that clubs complete the season with the same squad they had available, prior to the suspension of the campaign,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters revealed in a statement.
“Players can extend their contracts beyond June 30 until the end of the season, but it must be agreed by both parties,” he concluded.
