Erik ten Hag is not satisfied with United’s investments made in the transfer market. He can be satisfied with his first season at Manchester United. He now wants to continue. The manager therefore hopes for a nice transfer budget for the upcoming summer. “If you want to participate in this competition, you have to invest,” Ten Hag emphasises in a major interview with The Times.
“We didn’t do anything in the winter. We only hired three players.”
Ten Hag managed to take United back to the Champions League, finishing third in the domestic league. The Dutchman also won the League Cup and can also take the FA Cup next week. Manchester City is the opponent in the final at Wembley.
City became champions of England again this season and Ten Hag wants to try to close the gap with the neighbour. The manager sees opportunities, but then the cut has to be made. “We also invested in the past summer, I have to be honest,” says Ten Hag. “But we didn’t do anything in the winter. We only hired three players.”
Ten Hag asks for reinforcements: “If you want to participate, you have to invest”
“But if you look around you, you see that all other clubs invested to finish in the top four,” continues Ten Hag. “We didn’t invest. You can’t ignore that. If you want to participate in this competition, you have to invest. I need purchases, yes.”
Ten Hag seems to be mainly looking for a new striker. Harry Kane’s name is often mentioned, but Ten Hag does not go into it. What we need besides Marcus Rashford is an extra player with scoring ability. Whether it comes from our own team, or whether we have to attract one,’ said Ten Hag.
Possibility of lifting Greenwood’s suspension
Mason Greenwood could be that player, but that’s a sensitive issue. Allegations of assault and rape against the attacker were dropped in February, but United are also conducting their own investigation before possibly lifting Greenwood’s suspension. “He has shown in the past that he is capable of playing that role, but it is not my decision whether Mason returns,” says Ten Hag.
