PGA Championship: Although Rory McIlroy was pleased with his performance at the PGA Championship, he insisted that he needed to improve after having to settle for another major top-10 finish at Oak Hill.
McIlroy entered the week having missed the cut at The Masters and had a poor showing at the Wells Fargo Championship. He then had another wayward day off the tee as he struggled to a round-opening score of 71.
As he continued to struggle to rediscover his best form, the former world No. 1 acknowledged he “couldn’t believe” he was just five shots off the halfway lead. Meanwhile, McIlroy persevered throughout the weekend to shoot back-to-back 69s and finish in a tie for eighth.
McIlroy commented, “I’ll look back on this week as proud of how I hung in there, and I guess my attitude and sticking to it, not having my best stuff,” after finishing the tournament on two under. “I simply came in wanting to play a golf event, not thinking about positioning myself to be competitive or to win.
“Since I didn’t think I had a chance to win this week, all I could do was show up, play my best, and try to make the most of the situation.
“I feel both far and somewhat close at the same time. To explain is challenging. Sometimes I think my performance was the worst I could have done, while other times I think it was the finest.
“It simply doesn’t feel as like it is where it should be, and once more, you should return home and work on some things. Just attempt to solve it, I suppose. A week like this has both positive and negative aspects.
“I’m just trying to put all of those puzzle pieces together, see what you can improve upon, and then go on. I think I need to be at my best to succeed, but I don’t actually need to be at my best to compete and persevere. I do need to improve, though.
