George Russell has come out and said that he’s confident that he will stay at Williams for a third year in 2021. He said that deputy team principal Claire Williams has told McLaren that she wants to keep hold of the 22-year-old Brit. Russell along with teammate Nicholas Latifi both are under contract with Williams till 2021. “Claire was very firm in her decision that she was not ready to let me go,” said Russell. “Ultimately, as I have a contract with Williams, I have to respect that decision.”
Mercedes have made enquiries as part fo due diligence for their driver decisions for 2021. Mercedes are most likely going to retain both their current drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas but neither of them have signed contracts for next season as things stand. “We have started talking about it because we all realised time goes quick with these triple headers, but nothing is signed yet,” said Bottas. “Things are moving in the right direction. The main thing is to keep focusing the championship. There are big things to be achieved this year and I am sure things will move on eventually. If things drag on, it is not nice, but we have only done two races and there is no big panic or big rush.”
Williams’future is up in the air with the team putting themselves up for sale having made a 13m loss. Russell is regarded as one of the brightest rising stars in F1 and could be a potential replacement at McLaren soon. His teammate Latifi who just signed a multi-million dollar contract says that he will be racing with Williams come 2021. Both drivers have said that they will be racing with Williams irrespective of a takeover.
