Grand Slam: Andy Murray withdrew from the French Open this year in order to focus on the grass-court season leading up to Wimbledon.
After struggling to regain his best form on clay in recent weeks, the 36-year-old withdrew from the qualifying draw at Roland Garros and will instead focus on a hectic grass-court programme in the lead-up to Wimbledon.
After demonstrating that he was in physical shape to compete against the greatest players in the world with some gruelling battles at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, Murray has struggled to find his best form on clay.
The former world number one, who underwent significant hip surgery in 2018, battled through two five-set victories over Thanasi Kokkinakis and Matteo Berrettini before falling to Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round.
Following first-round exits in Monte Carlo and Madrid, he defeated Tommy Paul in the ATP Challenger event final in Aix-en-Provence at the beginning of this month to win his first title at any level since 2019.
He then had setbacks at the Italian Open in Rome and lost another Challenger match to an old rival, Stan Wawrinka, in Bordeaux.
Murray added, “It’s not so much about [physical worries],” following his defeat by Wawrinka. After everything I did at the beginning of the year, I have faith that my body will be well. I played two five-hour bouts back-to-back and performed well physically. There is no reason why it should be any different in this case.
“It was more simple to assess my game. At this point in my career, it’s only reasonable to prioritise what’s important. I am confident in my physique now, but I am conscious that Wimbledon is where I stand the best opportunity of going far.”
According to reports, the 36-year-old is still debating which tournaments to aim for, and they may be Surbiton from June 4 to 11 and Queen’s from June 19 to 25. The first day of Wimbledon is set on July 3.
