French Open: Daniil Medvedev, the second seed, lost to Brazilian world No. 172 Thiago Seyboth Wild in the first round on Tuesday, ending any chance he had of winning the French Open.
After four hours and fifteen minutes of play, the qualifier defeated Medvedev 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (6-8) 2-6 6-3 6-4 to put an end to his chances of earning a second Grand Slam championship.
The 23-year-old Seyboth Wild impressed the Philippe Chatrier audience with his aggressive tennis on the court where Brazilian great Gustavo Kuerten won the Coupe des Mousquetaires three times.
“Beating Daniil on such a court is a dream come true,” Seyboth Wild said. “I’ve been watching him play since I was a junior.”
“I made an attempt to use my forehand against his, and it was rather successful. At the beginning of the second set, I began to cramp, but I kept my composure and played my best tennis.”
He appeared to have wasted his opportunity after winning the first set when, in the second set tie-break, he missed the simplest of overheads to give Medvedev the set, failing to convert a 6-4 advantage.
The Russian easily took the third set as well, but Seyboth Wild, a former US Open Junior winner, fought back wonderfully in the fourth set and broke Medvedev’s serve three times to win a thrilling match.
Medvedev grew more enraged with the spectators during the match, motioning for them to be calm and ranting endlessly at his box before leaving the court without saying goodbye to the crowd.
“The only thing was when I asked the umpire to check the mark,” he stated afterwards. “I thought that was quite close. I was just talking to her about where she sees the ball and why she keeps getting booed. All I did was tell them to stop talking.”
When he was younger, Medvedev was very opposed to playing on clay, but he has greatly improved since then, reaching the quarterfinals here in 2021 and earning his first Masters championship on the red clay in Rome just this month.
