Poor Sportsmanship: In response to Novak Djokovic’s charges of bad sportsmanship during their unexpectedly heated match in Rome two weeks ago, British No. 1 Cameron Norrie has fired back.
The primary climax of the heated match, which Norrie lost, occurred when the Serbian turned aside to return to the baseline and Norrie smacked Djokovic in the ankle with a smash.
Djokovic slammed Norrie for not just that incident but also for what he saw to be the British No. 1 celebrating in his face after winning points, as well as a medical timeout he took before the match’s decisive game.
The game was handily won by Djokovic, who stated: “Those are the things that we players know in the locker room it’s not fair play, it’s not how we treat each other.”
Norrie said that he did not understand the commotion around the collision and that he immediately apologised. I launched the ball low after looking up. I missed him turning around to accept the challenge.
“It was one of those games where he was one of the top players in the world, so I wanted to play well and give it everything I had.
“I had no idea that I was in his face. If anyone knows me, I believe I can be rather loud in some matches. For me, it was just another tennis match.
“I took the medical time-out because I could feel my hip a little bit. It complies with the laws. Additionally, it is within the regulations for him to arrive late and start the game.”
The final remark was a clear allusion to the fact that Djokovic was more than ten minutes late for the game after spending some time in the medical facility.
“The match was set to begin at 11 a.m., but he requested extra time on the physio bed,” according to Norrie. “And we left at around 11.12 or 11.13 a.m. I doubt he noticed anything wrong with that. He was silent to me the entire time. And he was never sorry.
“I inquired, ‘Was that okay to do that?’ Yes, it is allowed, they said. He becomes defaulted after fifteen minutes. I said, “OK,” and then I continued to warm up.
“I’ve never seen a player do it before. No matter what the event is, you arrive on time, tennis match or not.”
