With the IPL 2021 season almost over, attention has already gone to the major auctions planned ahead of the next season. The sale of two new teams is scheduled for October 25, which is also when all information about the retention rules will be released. However, some facts have already been published that offer an idea of how BCCI intends to ensure that all ten teams have an equal opportunity to construct a great team in the future.
While it was previously reported that current franchises might be permitted a maximum of three retentions, it appears that some changes have been made to that number. According to Cricbuzz, teams may be permitted to keep up to four players (3 Indians + 1 Overseas or 2 Indians + 2 Overseas). The source also indicates that if clubs are allowed to keep four players, there may be no ‘Right to Match’ cards available during the mega auctions.
How about the two new groups?
While allowing the current clubs to keep four players each would be wonderful news for them, it might not be so good for the two new teams that will enter the tournament. As a result of this policy, they will be unable to sign the league’s top 32 players because they will be retained by the league’s current eight franchises.
However, the BCCI is considering a new regulation that will give the two new clubs a fair chance to attract some major names ahead of the huge auctions. The two teams will be allowed to make some special choices’ from the list of names who have registered for the auction, the amount of which will depend on the number of retentions allowed to each franchise.
The mechanism for selecting players has not yet been determined, however, it may take the form of a draught, as was employed when Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant joined the league. With so much ambiguity surrounding the huge auctions, all information is likely to be released by the end of this month, when the owners of two new teams are settled.
