MLC 2023: After considerable anticipation, Major League Cricket 2023 has officially begun, with the first four matches providing spectators with thrilling cricket action. The league has six franchises, giving various aspiring cricketers from the United States the opportunity to make their mark on the global stage.
Sujith Gowda of the Washington Freedom is one such player willing to offer his all in the MLC. Gowda scored 1014 runs at a strike rate of 148.9 in 30 Minor League Cricket matches over two seasons and was signed by the team to participate in MLC 2023. When it comes to the competition, Gowda believes it will transform cricket in the United States.
“100%, because the way the entire organisation is functioning and the way cricket has come into the country now and the way grassroots cricket is developing in the US, there are a lot of good things to see in the future because there are so many young kids doing really well. And there is plenty. Here in the United States, talent abounds. So it’ll go a different path in the next years, and it’ll be very huge,” Gowda was cited as saying by News18.
In terms of the team’s locker room, Gowda stated that he is thrilled to be working with famed South African quick Dale Steyn, who also serves as the team’s bowling coach.
“To be honest, being a part of this and being beside him is a gift. To be in the same team bus as him, to be with him, to be near him. When I was a child, Dale Steyn was one of my favourite fast bowlers to watch. It’s like a gift to be honest, the way he used to run in and bowl, swing both ways with that aggression, and now being on the same team with him,” he added.
The Washington Freedoms were defeated in their debut game by the Seattle Orcas.
Meanwhile, the Washington Freedom did not have the ideal start to the season, losing by five wickets to the Seattle Orcas in their first game. Washington scored 144/7 after being put in to bat first, with Akeal Hosein leading the way with 33* off 22.
In response, Seattle chased down the mark in 19.4 overs, with Nauman Anwar 48 (37) leading the way. Following their defeat in the first game, Washington will face the Texas Super Kings at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on Sunday, July 16 (Monday, July 17 IST).
