IPL 2023: Sam Billings, a star wicketkeeper-batter for the two-time IPL champion Kolkata Knight Riders, has withdrawn his name from the IPL 2023 in order to concentrate on the lengthier version of the game in England’s county cricket, dealing the team a severe setback ahead of the competition. He posted about his choice on the microblogging website Twitter.
Sam Billings was signed by KKR earlier this year for a base price of INR 2 crore at the IPL 2022 mega auction. He played for the team in eight matches, appearing for the team in eight matches, and scoring 169 runs at an average of 24.14 with a maximum score of 36. Despite a lacklustre performance in IPL 2022, Billings was anticipated to join skipper Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana to form the middle order’s backbone.
The English cricketer has, however, switched his attention to red ball cricket in an effort to gain a spot in the national team under the new leadership of Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes. During the English summer, he will play county cricket for Kent in an effort to get his name considered for the Test series against Pakistan.
“I’ve made the difficult choice that I won’t be playing for the KKRiders in the upcoming IPL. At the start of the English summer, Kent cricket will concentrate on longer-format cricket. I appreciate the chance so much, KKR! I enjoyed every second of it. a fantastic franchise with some geniuses. I hope to speak with you again soon,” Billings posted on his Twitter account.
In a tweet, he declared his love for the Kolkata-based team and expressed his desire to play for them again in the future. He is currently regarded as English wicketkeeper Ben Foakes’ back-up, but he will work to establish himself in the upcoming English summer to earn a spot in the Test team.
