An era has ended, according to Thierry Henry. Liverpool reached the Champions League final and finished second in the Premier League last year. It is currently seventh in the league and on the verge of being kicked out of the Champions League.
Tuesday night’s match against Real Madrid seems like a long time ago compared to Liverpool’s recent success. Thierry Henry thinks Liverpool need to have conducted the selection process more thoroughly last summer in an interview with CBS Sports. “Some players are no longer at their level, but I don’t think Jürgen Klopp should leave,” the striker said.
He added, “Even the best of people experience bad luck; I did too. An era is coming to an end. The season has been characterised by that. Something of that nature do occur. We all approve of what they have demonstrated in recent years, but it is also obvious that things are not going as well as they once were.”
Henry came to the same conclusion as various English media outlets that Liverpool’s defence is notably poor. “I observed a flimsy team. even more brittle than that. Against Brentford, Wolverhampton, and Brighton, they already gave up too many goals, never mind when they faced Real Madrid. They must alter because they are vulnerable,” the Frenchman remarked.
Press criticism of Liverpool
“Maybe the most humble evening in Liverpool’s long, distinguished European history,” according to the Liverpool Echo. “Liverpool faces a much more difficult assignment in three weeks at the Santiago Bernabeu than even defeating AC Milan in Istanbul in 2005,” they said.
The Champions League spectacle left a lasting impression on The Guardian. “It was chaotic, thrilling, jarring, and occasionally extremely perplexing. A football game that appeared to shift between genres quickly, from revenge drama to comedy and from suspense to imperial victory,” read their report.
Although praising Real Madrid’s performance, the newspaper noticed a serious issue at Liverpool. “This was total devastation. In a game that gave Jurgen Klopp a sense of the end, Real Madrid faced opponents who seemed to be losing themselves. Liverpool occasionally just disintegrated. The defence was shoddy and disrespectful. The same injuries were pummelling repeatedly, carving off their weak spots,” it said.
