Atletico Madrid is said to be interested in doubling the salary of Thomas Partey, a midfielder, in order to get to him to remain with them.
Suspecting Arsenal to be interested, Atletico opened negotiations with Partey on a new deal until the summer of 2025, which would see him earn £130,000 a week in Madrid.
According to The Guardian, that Arsenal has yet to make a formal offer to the 26-year-old, although the Gunners have reportedly made contact with the player’s representative.
At the moment, Partey has a €50 m (£43.6 m) release clause at Atletico, but this could be up to €100 m (£87.2 m) if it were to make fresh terms.
This eagerness can be attributed to the midfielder gaining traction with many top clubs. Ghana International has been closely linked to the move to the Emirates in recent weeks following the impressive Wanda Metropolitano campaign of 2019-20.
Partey has racked up 35 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side this season. Since 2015, the middleman has chalked up 15 goals in 174 games for Atletico in all competitions. Unsurprisingly, the La Liga team is supposedly eager to offer him a bumper new deal to stay in the Spanish capital.
