Just three days after Barca’s 3-1 El Clasico loss at the Nou Camp against Real Madrid, Josep Maria Bartomeu, the president of Barcelona, allegedly resigned from his position at the club.
Bartomeu had only agreed on Monday against stepping down from the job after a crunch meeting.
But 24 hours later, he considered it acceptable to quit the job, according to The Daily Express.
Actually, initial reports in Spain suggested that Bartomeu could resign but that he had chosen to fight on and off the pitch to turn the club around.
Following Barca’s bad season last term and Lionel Messi’s decision to leave the club in the summer, Bartomeu was under pressure.
Barca finished second in La Liga and was humiliated in the Champions League quarter-final in August by Bayern Munich, going down 8-2.
Then, superstar forward Messi tried to leave but was forced to remain, with the club refusing to consider an offer lower than his release clause of € 700 million.
