Christian Eriksen received the trophy for ‘comeback of the year’ at the Laureus Awards on Monday.
Eriksen receives ‘Comeback of the year award’
The 31-year-old Manchester United midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at the European Championship. On June 21, 2021, Eriksen collapsed shortly before half-time during the 1-0 lost group match with Finland.
Eriksen returned to club football at Brentford last season, before making the switch to Manchester United last summer. “His return to the highest level is an extremely remarkable story,” writes the Laureus committee on Twitter about Eriksen, who also made his appearance at the World Cup in Qatar with Denmark in December.
Cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten, motorcycle racer Francesco Bagnaia, athlete Jakob Ingebrigtsen, basketball player Klay Thompson and golfer Tiger Woods were the other candidates for the prize.
Cold out of the air for now: Messi back on the training field
Speaking of comebacks, another award winner Lionel Messi is back in training with Paris Saint-Germain. The French national champion reports this on his digital channels on Monday. After a week’s absence, the Argentinian star is back with the leader of the Ligue 1.
A controversial case last week: the stars of PSG saw their day off withdrawn after the defeat at home against Lorient (1-3), but Lionel Messi had already planned an ambassador trip to Saudi Arabia for Monday. The world champion decided to ignore the decision of trainer Christophe Galtier and traveled to the Middle East after all.
This led to a storm of criticism: ferocious supporters demanded his departure, among other things, and various international media have now reported that Messi is indeed working on his last weeks in French service. PSG won without his star at Troyes (1-3) and is now finishing the last weeks of the season with Messi in the ranks, after the club suspended him for two weeks.
Winning Ligue 1 seems more than achievable with a six-point lead and four games to play. PSG still have four games to go, and the opponents are not the toughest teams in the league. Lens is the side 2nd in the league with a total of 72 points.
