Football News: The United States women’s national team (USWNT) and US Soccer, the regulatory body, have agreed to settle equal pay concerns in a lawsuit that has been ongoing since 2019, the two parties said on Tuesday.
“We are pleased to announce that, contingent on the negotiation of a new collective bargaining agreement, we will have resolved our longstanding dispute over equal pay and proudly stand together in a shared commitment to advancing equality in soccer,” US Soccer and USWNT said in a joint statement.
According to US media reports, players will get a total of $24 million as part of the agreement, as well as a promise from US Soccer to equalise compensation for men’s and women’s national teams in all events, including the World Cup, in future collective bargaining agreements.
The agreement is conditional on the USWNT players’ union and the federation ratifying a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
The District Court will schedule formal approval of the settlement once a new CBA has been ratified.
As part of the settlement of the long legal fight, which dates back to a 2016 lawsuit filed with the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, players will get $22 million in back wages as direct compensation.
“Getting to this day has not been easy. The US Women’s National Team players have achieved unprecedented success while working to achieve equal pay for themselves and future athletes,” the joint statement added.
“Today, we recognize the legacy of the past USWNT leaders who helped to make this day possible, as well as all of the women and girls who will follow.”
