Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard almost couldn’t believe what they saw against Real Madrid. Liverpool experienced a historically bad evening on Tuesday.
“I’ve never seen a team come to Anfield, on any European night I can remember. And destroy Liverpool like that,” Carrager’s analysis read at CBS Sports. That was lousy from Liverpool, shameful, we’ve been apologising for them all season. We’ve said why they’re not doing as well as in previous seasons. But that was a shame in the second half.’
Liverpool had some hope after two successive Premier League victories, but according to Carragher they were worth little. “It was nonsense that Liverpool were back after the last two games, they were playing against an Everton team who had one of the worst performances in a derby, they did nothing. Newcastle had ten men and created chances, if they had had eleven they would have come back into the game, I am convinced of that,” the former defender said.
The former defender mainly focused on the last line of The Reds. He adds, “These Liverpool defences, who we’ve been told for years have the best players in the world, can’t handle it. For years they had a front of six in front of them who worked harder and smarter than any other team in football, but now that they’re gone they’ve absolutely fallen apart.”
Gerrard also saw how Liverpool painfully gave up a 2-0 lead completely. “I think it’s a reality check. A perfect start, just what you need on a European night – start fast, put yourself ahead, build on… They need to look in the mirror now,” he mentioned.
“Liverpool were outclassed, Liverpool were dominated,” Gerrard claims
“Sometimes in football you have to hold your hands up. And say the best team won,” Gerrard claimed at the Liverpool Echo. “Liverpool were outclassed, Liverpool were dominated, they were better in most areas of the pitch, you have to say that.”
Carragher specifically addressed Virgil van Dijk in his analysis afterwards. “What makes me laugh is that Virgil van Dijk said a few months ago that I wouldn’t get in their back four – I think I would take his place at the moment.”
