Karl-Heinz Rummenigge lashed out at Barcelona and Juventus on Wednesday. The former Bayern Munich president also has serious questions about the policies of the Premier League clubs.
In an interview with Corriere dello Sport, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was asked to reflect on the transfer window. Soon it was about the Premier League. To no surprise Chelsea FC’s transfer policies was his main concern. “English clubs spend bizarre amounts of money in an irrational way,” says Rummenigge.
“They make unbelievable mistakes, the market is completely blown up there. Chelsea have spent hundreds of millions and are now tenth in the table, it’s absurd. The globalization of the market has created a huge inequality,” said the 67-year-old German, who was a director at Bayern for thirty years.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge strongly believes the Super League is not the way to go forward in European football
Bayern was therefore strongly against the creation of the Super League two years ago. “It is no coincidence that it was the idea of three clubs facing huge liquidity problems,” Rummenigge refers to Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid. “The Super League is not the solution. The Financial Fair Play rules must be stricter. Clubs are under constant pressure from fans and the media to spend money, but football is the only industry that loses all the time.”
The former Bayern Munich president slams Juventus and Barcelona mercilessly
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is surprised about recent developments at Juventus and Barcelona. “I couldn’t believe what Juventus did. I’ve never heard anything like it in my life. They are a top club in Italy and Europe, but have scored an incredible own goal,” the former director responds to the financial abuses, which, among other things, resulted in a penalty of fifteen points for the club from Turin.
Barcelona, for its part, is currently under fire for an alleged payment to the former vice president of the Spanish arbitration corps, Enriquez Negreira. “I had to laugh when I saw the news, but it doesn’t surprise me,” says Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “Whenever we played in Spain, I got a strange feeling. These are unacceptable things that go beyond national competitions. This must be examined with all seriousness and respect.”
