Lionel Messi joined a select list of internationals on Tuesday evening. The Argentinian star player broke the limit of one hundred international goals against Curaçao ( 7-0 ) as the third player.
Magical milestone Messi on party night: “I hope this madness never ends”
Messi made his 100th, 101st and 102nd goal for Argentina against former Vitesse goalkeeper Eloy Room, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo (122 goals for Portugal) and Ali Daei (109 goals for Iran). However, the 35-year-old left leg is the first world champion to score more than a hundred goals for his country.
And it was already a festive evening in Santiago del Estero, where 42,000 fans were present to celebrate the world title won in Qatar with their Argentinian heroes. Messi was impressed by the great atmosphere. He wrote on Instagram: “I hope we can continue to share these moments together and that this craziness never ends.”
Room conquers Messi’s shirt: “He wanted mine too”
Eloy Room is currently living in an absolute dream. The Curaçao goalkeeper conceded seven goals against Argentina, but nevertheless had a great evening. In addition, he hooked a beautiful relic.
“Everyone wanted it, but I got it,” Room told NOS with a twinkle in his eye. On a visit to the world champion, the former PSV goalkeeper exchanged his shirt with Lionel Messi. “At half time I happened to walk next to him towards the players’ tunnel. So I asked for his shirt and he immediately said it was good.”
“I thought: he says that, but he will forget,” Room remembered. Nothing could be further from the truth, because the best player in the world kept his promise. He added, “After the final whistle he walked away from me, but I called him. Then he immediately handed over his shirt. I thought he didn’t need mine, but he asked right away.”
Messi did not fail to give Room some compliments: “He complimented me on some saves. Nice to hear that from such a big player, he was very nice and sincere.’”
“I’ll frame this one,” Room laughed. Messi’s shirt will be one of the great showpieces of his career. “I never actually do it. I only did it with my debut shirt, but this one will be added. This is very special though. I don’t know if he does mine too, but he asked for it. Who knows.”
