In November, there were persistent rumors that the owners of Liverpool wanted to put the club up for sale. Those rumors have now been brushed aside by the owner himself.
Liverpool is currently majority owned by US company Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and CEO John William Henry has told The Boston Sports Journal that he does not want to sell Liverpool. “I know there have been a lot of rumors about Liverpool lately, but I like to stick to the facts. We have only been concerned with the ongoing process,” said Henry.
“Shall we sell Liverpool? No. Will we stay in England forever? No. Are we in talks with new investors for the club? Yes,” he mentioned. That means that Liverpool can expect no new owner soon, but investors. He added, “I do think something will happen in that, but it won’t be a sale. Have we sold anything in the past twenty years?”
Premier League club sales have been a hot topic lately. For example, Newcastle United has come into the hands of extremely wealthy Saudi owners, Chelsea has a new owner, there are two parties in the race to take over Manchester United and a billion-dollar bid is reportedly currently being prepared for Tottenham Hotspur.
Cody Gakpo’s farewell at the Philips Stadium
In related news, PSV will give Cody Gakpo the space to say goodbye to the Philips Stadium and the public. The 23-year-old attacker left for Liverpool in the winter and, if his schedule allows, will return to Eindhoven on Thursday for PSV’s Europa League match against Sevilla.
Gakpo exchanged PSV for more than forty million euros for Liverpool. With his new club he will play in the Champions League on Tuesday. Real Madrid visits Anfield for the absolute cracker in the round of 16. Liverpool will play against Crystal Palace on Saturday in the Premier League.
Nevertheless, Gakpo seems to have time to be present in Eindhoven on Thursday evening for the match between PSV and Sevilla. The people of Eindhoven have to make up for a 3-0 deficit at home.
With the comeback being unlikely, perhaps the Philips Stadium will have something to cheer on this Thursday.
