Raheem Sterling, the Chelsea winger has been a staple of the Three Lions in the past few years. He has won 78 caps with the national side and has scored 19 goals. A handful of those caps among them have come under the management of Gareth Southgate.
England suffered relegation in the Nations League after they finished bottom of their group. This has put the manager Southgate under immense pressure.
Following this, Raheem Sterling has stood up for his national team manager. He thought it was unfair for Gareth to be blamed after the success he has brought.
Sterling said: “We all understand that’s a part of playing football at the top level. You are being scrutinised, much of it unfairly, of course, but that is the level England is at right now.
“We’re constantly under pressure to win, so we shouldn’t be alarmed by this slight drop in performance. Now that winter is approaching, we have a significant opportunity to go out and demonstrate our abilities once more.
“Gareth has led us to a semifinal and a championship, and that simply demonstrates the course we’re taking.
“After the summer, we all had to take some time to reflect on our own selves. It is not appropriate to place all the blame on the management given how we performed in the competition.”
