Thiago Alcântara made the move from Bayern Munich to Liverpool in 2020 for just £20 million, with the potential for a further £5m in add-ons.
The Liverpool number six has thrived in his former clubs Barcelona and Bayern Munich, winning numerous trophies and accolades along the way. However, in his first season, there was a lot of criticism surrounding the move as Thiago failed to keep himself fit for a considerable period. Furthermore, few claimed that he slowed down the play.
However, the midfielder has more than proved the doubters wrong with his incredible performances as a Red this season.
Following the Merseyside derby on Sunday, former Leeds striker, Noel Whelan spoke about the Spaniard to Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“Look, he’s a top-class player and a joy to watch,” Whelan said
“He’s so calm, very rarely gives the ball away, and he’s capable of dominating a midfield.
“Now we’re seeing the best of him. We’re seeing exactly what all the hype was about and what made Liverpool go out and get him.
“He’s perfect for Liverpool and the way they play the game.
“Look, he will be vitally important for the chances of the quadruple. Having someone who can control a game is so key and he’s got that know-how.
“He’s got parts to play in all four competitions, so keeping him fit will be massive.”
