Read a quick summary of the match below, and watch the Villarreal vs Dinamo Zagreb extended highlights here:
- Villarreal dominated the game and the possession of the ball. They even came close to taking the lead after 25 minutes when forward Samuel Chukwueze’s close-range volley hit the post.
- Nonetheless, Paco Alcacer scored only 10 minutes later. Chukwueze fouled on the offside in the build-up, but after a VAR check, the referee considered the goal as valid.
- Gerard Moreno doubled the hosts’ lead three minutes before the break. This was after Alcacer’s effort had been parried by Dominik Livakovic. Raul Albiol ran a marauding run from centre back to tee up the chance.
- The visitors rallied after the break and Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli had to block many smart attempts. At the other end, Chukwueze and Moreno spurned chances to ensure victory.
- Finally, Mislav Orsic gave one goal to Zagreb 15 minutes from time. Beside this goal, though, the visitors never threatened to seriously equalize as the Spaniards held firm.
We predicted Villareal to win, as you can see here, but not quite so superbly!
