Golf News: Just a few months after earning his Tour card through the Korn Ferry Tour Finals, Australian Lucas Herbert won his first tournament on the PGA Tour when he claimed victory at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship last year.
This week, he will, unfortunately, be unable to successfully defend his one and only Tour triumph.
This week, Herbert is returning to Australia to attend a close friend’s wedding while also taking some time to recuperate up for a potential late push into the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
I’m not going to return to the United States until the new year, Herbert told Golf Digest, adding that he had a friend’s wedding and was in the groom’s party. I really wanted to have defended; hopefully, I can go back in the future.
Due to Herbert’s long time on the Tour last year and fewer DP World Tour starts, the Australian needs a strong showing at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa next month to move up into the top 50 and earn a spot in the DP World Tour’s Dubai finals.
These two competitions are truly unique, Herbert remarked. “Dubai is a terrific spot to play the Nedbank, and I enjoy doing so. I’ve already triumphed in Dubai. Being one of the top 50 DP World Tour players to advance to the final means a lot. To move up into the top 50, I’ll probably need a pretty strong performance at the Nedbank, but I’m sure I can do it.
Herbert has competed in just five DP World Tour events this year, with one of those being a T-15 showing at St. Andrews in The Open.
Whatever happens on the DP World Tour, Herbert will compete in the Australian PGA Championship and Australian Open to finish 2022 before returning to the United States in early 2023 to restart his Tour career.
