At The Masters, Brooks Koepka is the player to beat going into the weekend because he is in a lot better position than he was on his last two trips to Augusta National.
Between 2017 and 2019, Koepka competed in several more majors and won four of them, but a series of knee and hip injuries—some of which were featured in the recent Netflix series “Full Swing”—left him worried about his ability to compete at the top level.
The American was unhappy once more when back-to-back 75s caused him to be eliminated early from the competition last year. At The Masters in 2021, where he attempted to return too soon after knee surgery, he could hardly kneel to read putts and missed the cut.
Koepka confessed on Friday, “I don’t even know whether I should be saying this, but quite sure I tried to break the back window of the car with my fist. I made two attempts to get it through the back window. After the first attempt failed, we decided to try again.
“Yes, last year was very frustrating. Really irritating. Since then, I’ve come a long way.”
Following his poor showings at the PGA Championship and US Open, Koepka has not played on the PGA Tour since. Later that month, he announced he will be joining the LIV Golf circuit.
If I’m being fully honest, I think it would have been more difficult for Brooks Koepka to make the decision to transfer if he had been in better health, he said when questioned. Yet, I’m content with the choice I made.
“I didn’t want to play the game any longer if I couldn’t move the way I wanted to. That’s how easy it is. There were undoubtedly times like that. It was a challenging year. I’m just so frustrated.”
Koepka makes progress again with LIV
Before turning the wheel and winning the first LIV Golf event in Jeddah in October, Koepka struggled with his form and fitness. Nevertheless, a win in the LIV Golf event in Orlando last Sunday gave him plenty of confidence going into the first major of the year.
I sensed it coming probably at the end of last year, Koepka said. “Not quite all the way there it was. Perhaps in January, I realised I was returning. I was certain that my strength, mobility, and golf swing abilities were all where they needed to be.”
