US Women’s Open: As she prepares to participate in the US Women’s Open this week at Pebble Beach, Leona Maguire feels she has the golf game to compete with the greatest women in the world.
The 28-year-old Irishwoman is still looking for her first LPGA major trophy, but she’s getting closer.
She finished fourth in the Women’s British Open and eighth at the US Women’s Open last year, and she had a one-shot lead going into the final round of the Women’s PGA Championship last month before falling away.
The Cavan native is certain she can compete with anyone on the tour.
“I’m in a nice mood. I believe it was wonderful to have a week off last week to recover and refresh before getting back to work. This is clearly going to be another excellent exam this week.
“I’ve been spoilt the previous few weeks. Some very outstanding golf courses. I believe Pebble is living up to the hype. It’s an awesome location to be.
“I’ve played some fantastic golf. It was fantastic to be in the final group for the Women’s PGA Championship on Saturday and Sunday. It demonstrated to me that I had the ability to compete with the finest players in the world.
“Yeah, I have some good momentum heading into the rest of the majors this summer.”
Pebble Beach has hosted the PGA Championship for Men once and the US Open for Men six times. The course is scheduled to reopen in 2027, 2032, 2037, and 2044, and the US Women’s Open will return three more times.
With Thursday’s tee times, Pebble Beach joins the US Women’s Open cycle, which now includes three visits (2035, 2040, and 2048) beyond this year.
With prize money and momentum on its side, women’s golf stands to benefit even more from exhibiting this big tournament in a familiar venue.
“A lot of us have grown up watching the guys here and US Opens, AT&T Pro-Ams, and all that, so it’s really special to be here for a US Open,” Maguire said.
