Brando runs in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle on Saturday before perhaps running in the July Cup at Newmarket; Kevin Ryan nine-year-old broke a blood vessel during his previous race at York.
Trainer Kevin Ryan thinks that old favourite Brando is ready to respond to his detractors once more when he runs in the Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle this weekend.
Brando, now nine years old, appeared to be running a good horse race in the Duke of York Clipper Logistics Stakes in May but fractured a blood vessel and finished ninth.
Brando might return to the July Cup at Newmarket after his trip to the North East, where he finished sixth last season, although Ryan is hoping for milder conditions.
“He usually does it once a year.” Regrettably, it was at the races. He’s done it at the races before, but he’s also done it at home.
“He was wonderful after that and has been in fantastic shape ever since.” We’ll race in Newcastle. He runs in short bursts, and there’s plenty of time between now and the July Cup. It would be a tragedy if he missed Newcastle only to have the ground grow up too quickly for him at Newmarket.
“Take a look at the horse race he ran on Champions Day last year to see why you should never write out Brando. He always responds to his detractors.”
Ryan had a successful week at Royal Ascot, highlighted by Wolferton Stakes winner Juan Elcano.
The four-year-old, who finished sixth in the Doncaster Mile Stakes on his previous outing, now has Group-level goals, including the Juddmonte International at York.
“There’s a Group Two at the July meeting at York which will probably slot in nicely for him,” Ryan said.
“We’re going to enter him in the Juddmonte.” He’s currently rated at 114, so if he keeps improving, we might be able to bring him back up to that level. In any case, he is deserving of the nomination.
“He’s jumping all over the place. He dropped very little weight, so he handled the race really well and was right back on track, so we’re quite pleased with him.
