The six-runner field treaded gingerly on the round course, which was utilised for the first time on the card following the overnight and morning deluges.
Alenquer, on the other hand, looked to be travelling inside himself and surged to the lead a furlong away before holding off Tasman Bay to win at 13-8.
Tom Marquand, the 13-8 favourite, was content to sit at the back of the tiny field and let the race unfold as Bellocio and Tasman Bay pushed the pace.
Given the challenging circumstances, the race known informally as the “Ascot Derby” could have devolved into a battle of attrition – but Alenquer surged up to challenge before speeding up swiftly.
The ground was never going to be an issue for him because he is by the German stallion Adlerflug, and he broke away well to win by a length and a half, with Tasman Bay running a cracker in second for former Olympic eventer Sir Mark Todd.
Sandrine kept her undefeated record intact in the Albany Stakes, giving Andrew Balding his second two-year-old winner of the week.
