NBA News: In her 2014 memoir “In My Skin,” WNBA star Brittney Griner describes her difficulties with her sexuality during her career and in her early years.
The book’s main subject is Brittney Griner’s time at Baylor University while in college. Her connection with head women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey was close but tumultuous. Baylor University had an “anti-homosexual actions” policy in effect when Brittney Griner was a student there. After verbally committing to Baylor, openly gay Griner revealed her sexual orientation to Mulkey.
Mulkey’s response was unhelpful, and she advised Griner to keep her sexual orientation a secret. Griner expressed her unhappiness with having to disguise her identity during her formative years throughout her novel.
According to Griner in an interview with ESPN, the coaches were concerned that if they appeared to support homosexuality, parents might not allow their children to play for Baylor. Despite the program’s success, there was apprehension that enrolling at Baylor might imply acquiescing in shifting attitudes toward acceptance of queerness.
