Tennis News: The hearing has been postponed until October 4 because Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios is accused of assaulting his former partner Chiara Passari in January 2021.
A magistrate turned down Nick Kyrgios’ request for a three-month adjournment in his assault case, saying she does not understand the “cause for concealment.”
The Wimbledon finalist is accused of common assault in connection with an alleged incident involving his former partner Chiara Passari in January 2021.
The matter was postponed until November 25 at the request of Nick Kyrgios‘ attorney Michael Kukulies-Smith on the grounds that the athlete spends little time in the region and that an application was anticipated. He did not show up at the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.
The request was denied by Magistrate Louise Taylor, who also took issue with the attorney’s refusal to provide specifics regarding the justification for the postponement.
“I’m not quite certain what the case for secrecy is,” she told Mr Kukulies-Smith in Canberra.
“Lots of defendants have matters they’d like the court to accommodate,” Ms Taylor added, in reference to the tennis player’s competition schedule.
The magistrate said she was not going to grant a three-month adjournment on “the basis of an application that might be made”.
Mr Kukulies-Smith acknowledged to the court the request was an “indulgence” but was not able to give further detail about the nature of the planned application, citing the “large contingent of media” which was present behind him.
