Felony Charges: Emoni Bates, a former top prospect, is expected to have all of her felony gun charges dismissed. Bates was detained on September 18 and charged with concealing a weapon and tampering with a firearm’s serial number. Since his arrest, Eastern Michigan has suspended him.
According to Bates’ attorney Steve Haney, his client entered a plea of guilty to one misdemeanour count of attempting to transport a weapon illegally. Haney reached a plea agreement that resulted in the two counts being dropped. Additionally, Bates will have to finish a misdemeanour diversion course.
On Wednesday, the Washtenaw County Circuit Court in Michigan is scheduled to dismiss all charges. Emoni Bates will rejoin his teammates at Eastern Michigan and get ready for the upcoming season after all charges are dropped.
I’m glad that this issue has been resolved so that Emoni may return to school and be among his teammates, said Haney.
Eastern Michigan attests to Emoni Bates’ rehiring
Scott Wetherbee, the athletic director at Eastern Michigan, issued a statement on Thursday confirming Emoni Bates’ reinstatement. Athletic and intellectual endeavours at Bates can now continue.
“The Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office and Emoni Bates’ defence team have reached an agreement that would result in the felony charges being dismissed,” Weatherbee stated. “The Eastern Michigan University department of athletics has been informed.” “Mr. Bates is immediately reinstated to all sports and university activities in compliance with EMU athletics standards.”
On October 27, Eastern Michigan will take on Grand Valley in an exhibition game. On November 8, the Tigers will play Wayne State to open their campaign. Bates will make her official Eastern Michigan debut in this contest. He will perform in front of Ypsilanti, Michigan, his hometown.
Will Emoni Bates be selected in the next round?
Former No. 1 high school recruit in the nation is Emoni Bates. Bates’ size and abilities led to him being dubbed the “next Kevin Durant.” In 2019, Sports Illustrated even referred to him as a prodigy and made comparisons to LeBron James, Magic Johnson, and Michael Jordan.
Bates, however, had a difficult debut campaign with the Memphis Tigers, averaging only 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds. He made the choice to use the transfer portal to leave and play for Eastern Michigan back in his hometown.
