NBA News: Following the Brooklyn Nets’ 2-5 start to the current NBA season, the team’s management has fired head coach Steve Nash.
Nash leaves with a 94-67 record and one playoff-round victory since being named head coach in September 2020.
When the Nets put together a super squad of previous NBA champions and MVP by combining Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden, it had so much potential. His departure puts an end to it.
Just 64 games were played between Durant and Irving due to injuries and Irving’s ineligibility difficulties related to his Covid immunisation status, while the combination of Durant, Irving, and Harden only made 16 appearances together.
Nash praised the Nets ownership for giving him the chance to play for the organisation in a post on Twitter. He also paid appreciation to the franchise’s supporters.
Nash will step down in the interim, and Jacque Vaughn, an assistant coach, will take over.
Sean Marks, general manager of the Nets, said, “We want to thank Steve for everything he gave to our franchise over the past two plus seasons.
“Since taking over as head coach, Steve has had to deal with a lot of unheard-of difficulties, and we are really appreciative of the leadership, tolerance, and humility he displayed throughout his time.
“Personally, I found this to be a very tough choice, but after much thought and consideration of how the season has started, we decided that a change is required at this time.
We send our warmest wishes for the future to Steve, Lilla, and their family.
Nash guided the Nets to a 48-24 mark in his first season in command. Brooklyn defeated the Boston Celtics in a first-round playoff series 4-1 before being defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
In February of this year, Harden, who had been acquired in a trade with the Houston Rockets in January 2021, was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers after just 13 months, and Ben Simmons, who had been injured, was received in return.
Durant demanded a trade while giving an ultimatum that demanded the departure of both Nash and general manager Marks over the offseason, adding to an already turbulent tenure. Later, Durant stayed with the Nets, claiming his initial request as a result of his worries about team culture and stability.
The Nets, who had dropped four straight games, defeated the Indiana Pacers by a score of 116-109 and will play home to the 3-4 Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.
Ime Udoka, the suspended head coach of the Boston Celtics, is the front-runner to follow Nash in Brooklyn, according to NBA source Shams Charania of The Athletic.
