NBA Rumors: According to Ric Bucher of FS1, the Brooklyn Nets are trying to deal with seasoned shooter Joe Harris after their mediocre (6-8) start to the season.
The fact that the Nets have one of the top five club payrolls this season is one of the main reasons they are shopping Harris. Brooklyn may reduce some of its payrolls by trading Harris, whose contract has two years and $38.6 million still to run.
“This season, the [LA] Lakers and Nets are both among the top five teams in terms of player payroll. Due to their repeated violations of the limit over the past few years, both are also subject to a significant luxury tax, according to Bucher’s report.
Since Joe Harris, a long-range shooter who is scheduled to earn $18 million this year and $19 million next season, is expected to be moved, league insiders claim that the Nets are also hoping to do so.
For the Brooklyn Nets this year, Joe Harris has had a terrible year. He has played 26.5 minutes per game, averaging 7.8 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.6 steals through 12 games.
Additionally, he is only shooting 41.4% overall and 34.5% from long range. This is in spite of Harris’ lifetime 3-point shooting percentage of 43.6% on 4.8 tries per game.
Seth Curry and Royce O’Neale are two more shooters the Brooklyn Nets have on considerably more affordable contracts. In comparison to Harris’ $18.6 million contract this season, Curry and O’Neale’s combined salary this season is $17.7 million.
The Nets will be hoping to find a trade for Harris despite the fact that he is 31 and has recently dealt with foot and ankle problems. He still provides a knockdown shooter with a solid NBA skill set that many contenders could use.
Harris might be able to regain his usual form with a new start on a new squad.
In trade for Joe Harris, what kind of player should the Brooklyn Nets aim for?
The Brooklyn Nets need size badly in their current form. No one taller than 6-foot-11 is on the roster for the Nets. With 40.8 rebounds per game, they are only 25th in the NBA in this category.
In any trade involving Joe Harris, the Nets should aim for a cheap big man in addition to salary cap relief.
The Nets’ best option will probably be to bring up a club that has the lowest team 3-point percentage in the league. Brooklyn will then have to persuade a team to take Harris back in exchange for a few smaller contracts, including one for a big man who can play in the rotation.
The Nets have plenty of time to wait for the right deal because the NBA trade deadline isn’t until February 9.
