NBA Draft: The first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draught was the least shocking portion of the event, as the San Antonio Spurs verified the least protected secret in sports when they selected French sensation Victor Wembanyama with the first overall choice on Thursday in New York.
Wembanyama, 19, is the most sought-after draught prospect since LeBron James in 2003.
Wembanyama, who is 7ft 4in, is anticipated to make an early impact in the NBA. He has good floor presence, likes to shoot from outside, and is successful in the paint.
In 44 games with the Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 this season, Wembanyama averaged 20.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.0 blocked shots, and 2.5 assists.
“This is something I’ve wanted to do my whole life,” Wembanyama remarked during the ESPN broadcast.
“Hearing that sentence from (NBA commissioner) Adam Silver, I’ve dreamed of it so much that I have to cry, man.”
The Spurs have won five NBA championships under coach Gregg Popovich and have already struck the No. 1 overall draught pick jackpot twice with the picks of future Hall of Famers David Robinson (1987) and Tim Duncan (1997), and Wembanyama hopes to join Robinson and Duncan as champs.
“It’s tough to win in this league,” Wembanyama stated. “My goal is to learn everything I can because I want to win that ring.”
Alabama big Brandon Miller was selected second overall by the Charlotte Hornets, and G League Ignite point guard Scoot Henderson was selected third overall by the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Thompson brothers went back-to-back to round out the first five picks. Amen Thompson was selected in the fourth round by the Houston Rockets, while Ausar Thompson was selected in the fifth round by the Detroit Pistons.
Since Markieff Morris (13th to the Phoenix Suns) and Marcus Morris (14th to the Rockets) in 2011, the Overtime Elite products are the first brothers to be taken in the first round in the same draught. They are also only the second set of brothers to be chosen in the top five, following Lonzo Ball (No. 2 to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017) and his younger brother LaMelo (No. 3 to the Hornets in 2020).
