The San Antonio Spurs have chosen to terminate Victor Wembanyama’s Summer League participation after two games.
The team said on Monday that they had seen everything they needed from the No. 1 selection in this year’s draught and will not use him in their final games in Las Vegas.
Wembanyama ended with 36 points, 20 rebounds, eight blocks, and three assists on 41% shooting from the field in the two games. He was on the pitch for almost 54 minutes.
The suspension was unsurprising; the Spurs never planned for Wembanyama to play the whole Summer League, and now they can utilise the minutes he would have played to evaluate other players.
“I’m going to sit down with the Spurs to figure out what the next few months are going to be like,” Wembanyama said following his summer finale on Sunday night.
“When I’m going on vacation, when I’ll start working out again, and whether I’ll practise in San Antonio or elsewhere. I simply know that the next two to three months – two to three great months – will revolutionise my life.”
Shutting him down from games – San Antonio has three or four games left in Las Vegas – begins what will be a much-needed sabbatical for the 19-year-old Frenchman, whose last professional season began over a year ago. He was in the French playoffs until a few days before the draught in June, and he’s had a hectic schedule since then.
Simply put, the Spurs think he needs time to recover and recharge before preparing for a training camp that begins in early October and an 82-game regular season.
“I don’t think basketball was even half of my schedule in the last month,” Wembanyama remarked. “I can’t take it anymore. I understand this is a significant time in my life, but I’m glad it’s finished. Honestly. I just want to shoot hoops. I just want to lift and work out because this is my life. Obviously, every first-round choice will go through this. And that just makes me stronger in the future.”
In Las Vegas, the Spurs have had a frantic few days.
