Boxing: According to promoter Ben-Shalom, Richard Riakporhe must wait for Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s decision before finalising his world title intentions.
Riakporhe beat Olanrewaju Durodola to capture the WBC silver cruiserweight title, and he’s set to challenge world champion Ilunga Makabu in the future.
The WBC, on the other hand, has granted Canelo’s request to bravely enter a fifth weight division by challenging Makabu.
BOXXER promoter Shalom remarked, “A lot of the cruiserweight class is on wait to see what Canelo performs.”
“He is boxing’s biggest star, and every regulating body will accommodate him.”
“The entire division is waiting for him – Riakporhe, Lawrence Okolie, Mairis Briedis.”
“Richard has only one goal in mind: to win the world title.
“We’re figuring out which path to take.” “Expect to hear news quite soon.”
Canelo, the undisputed super-middleweight champion, also has the option of fighting IBF and WBC titleholder Artur Beterbiev in the light-heavyweight division, which would be his most difficult challenge.
Bob Arum of Top Rank, who promotes Beterbiev, said of Canelo, “He has shown interest to me.”
Arum believes Canelo will “abandon” his aspirations to confront Makabu, allowing Riakporhe to pursue the Congolese titleholder.
BOXXER has scheduled Riakporhe’s comeback to the ring for March or April.
“By announcing himself back on the scene, he’s had a wonderful year,” Shalom remarked.
“He is a contender for the world title, particularly with the WBC. We’ll keep an eye on Makabu and Canelo to see what happens.
“That division offers a lot of potentials.
