Boxing Live: When the time comes for him to face world champion Lawrence Okolie, Richard Riakporhe, who has grown accustomed to boxing’s “show” and the role of entertainer, wants the best for his British cruiserweight opponent.
With WBC champion Okolie and WBA champion Arsen Goulamirian among those currently waiting in line as deserving title possibilities, The Midnight Train has steadily clobbered his way from dormancy to world title contention while swatting at outside opinions and any glimmer of doubt.
In March, Riakporhe viewed from home as Okolie made his comeback by defeating David Light of New Zealand by unanimous decision. Additionally, the 33-year-old has both advised and warned Okolie to arm up in the event of a domestic confrontation, even if he acknowledges that a little ring rust had to be expected.
Riakporhe explained why he didn’t show up: “I fell asleep, I was bored, I was frustrated and tired, and I was sick and tired, I was literally sick. I wanted to attend the fight, but I was in bed and my phone was being used by everyone to call me.
“I was actually more irritated by it since I was hoping for something explosive. Keep in mind that I’m speaking as a fan and from a fan’s perspective.
“Even though I’m a professional, I’m just a fan, and I didn’t get my money’s worth even though I didn’t pay for it.”
Okolie is presently preparing to face Chris Billam-Smith and defend his WBC cruiserweight championship.
After receiving criticism for his performance in his first fight in more than a year, Riakporhe, who is well aware of the stresses of inactivity, did show compassion for his upcoming adversary.
“I dislike criticising rivals since I am also a warrior and my own harshest critic. The fans, though, want to witness a potential confrontation between myself and him, therefore he must improve if our division is to succeed.
“It is clear that I will benefit more from his success if he performs well because doing so will increase our combined income. Hopefully, he performs even better the following time,” added Riakporhe.
