Bridgerweight Title: The World Boxing Council would support Lawrence Okolie’s entry into the brand-new bridgerweight category.
Despite the fact that no other world championship sanctioning organisation recognises the 224-pound weight class, the WBC feels it has “many virtues” and established it.
Lawrence Okolie was defeated by Chris Billam-Smith in a bloody contest for the WBO cruiserweight world championship. He would be rated and put himself in the running for a crack at the WBC belt if he stepped up to bridgerweight.
“Absolutely,” said Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, to Sky Sports. “One of the benefits of the new division is that. Another option for cruiserweights is bridgerweight, much like Evander Holyfield, who started off as a cruiserweight before moving up to heavyweight. needs to grow as a bridger before becoming a heavyweight.”
He contends that this new category may pave the way for a heavyweight title match in the future.
“Absolutely, without having to give anything up, 50 or 60 pounds [in a first switch to heavyweight],” according to Sulaiman.
“Keep in mind that any boxer competing at bridgeweight is also considered a heavyweight contender. As a result, it is a division with various strengths.”
Lukasz Rozanski currently holds the title at bridgeweight after defeating Alen Babic in the first round.
Okolie’s obligatory defence against Kevin Lerena will be his next fight, although he has the option to go towards boxing the victor if he so chooses.
“We have the winner Rozanski, who is from Poland, and the’silver’ winner Ryad Merhy, who was defeated by Lerena in South Africa. In what should be a thrilling match, Lerena will thus be forced to compete against Rozanski,” according to Sulaiman.
But compared to the renowned championships, the bridgerweight crown lacks legitimacy.
“The world rejects changes constantly, as does human nature. Pushing without taking into account changes is in human nature. But we’re happy of the improvements in the boxing world, including as the switch from 15 to 12 rounds, the day-of weigh-in, and the new gloves,” Sulaiman added.
“We have implemented so many medicinal advancements. the application of instant replay. There is opposition, but each and every bridgerweight match has been thrilling. Each and every one.
“It’s 224 pounds of petite heavyweights with good agility and power. Great fighting.”
